Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (NKJV)   “He who comes to God must believe that he is…” We must believe first, “that he is” – not just that he exists, but that he is who he says he is. We get to know his character by studying his word. And we find the comfort we are seeking in these questions we hold, ultimately, by rehearsing the truth of who he is to ourselves. Sometimes, this part seems simple, but in our … [Read more...]

Dwell On What is True About God

As Christian women, we are called by God to take every thought captive to obey Christ and to train our minds to think rightly. But if you struggle to come up with your own original thoughts about God’s goodness to you, go to His word and rehearse His truth to your heart. Jeremiah, who was known as the weeping prophet, wrote this assurance of God’s goodness: “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:  The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The … [Read more...]

Most of the time, when we feel hunger pangs, we know we need to go to the pantry or the fridge to feed ourselves. Often, though, in the busyness of life it’s not difficult to forget to meet one of our own basic needs, either because we don’t feel hungry or we’re busy ignoring the hunger and accomplishing other things. But this just results in us trying to deal with life physically unequipped. Sometimes Bible reading is a habit, but like eating, sometimes life circumstances overwhelm us and we need to be reminded of our need to fill up and fuel ourselves for … [Read more...]

You Have a Great Christ

“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV)   One of the most beautiful assurances of the Gospel is that through Jesus Christ, God takes us exactly as we are, but He doesn’t leave us as we are.   God our Father is constantly at work in us, and as Philippians 2 tells us, we are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling because … [Read more...]

Three Tips When Studying Your Bible Seems Impossible

PC: Kathleen Marie Photography

With the birth of our baby in March came the usual accessories: sleepless nights, daytime fatigue, extreme emotions (crying baby and me), and we even topped it all off with some health issues for the both of us. Add to that four other darlings who need constant love and attention, and some less-than-ideal life situations and it seemed like we had the perfect storm.  I felt sapped and was so tired, and so quick to get stuck reading my Bible and getting anything out of it. I kept reading it because I knew I needed to, I wanted to dig deeper, but … [Read more...]
