How to Find Joy for an Action-Packed Family

Elliesummer 2017

If your family is anything like ours, you’ve probably spent your summer juggling toddler nap times, summer camp, family vacations, play dates, and many requests for popsicles. It’s mid-summer as I sit writing this, and my kids are enjoying 90 degrees and fun in the sprinkler. But even as the sun shines down on us, our future fall schedules loom large, and I can already sense the many pressures that September is going to bring. Speaking honestly, I could probably schedule our lives down to the hour, and I have done that at times, just to manage moving … [Read more...]

Cultivating Discretion

chatovercoffee

I recently had an experience where a friend texted me and said "I will never be able to give you the details of the situation but I'm very worried about _______ and I'm asking you to pray." She later texted me to let me know that everything was going to be OK. 15 years ago, I might have persistently asked probing questions like "what is going on? Or, "Can you tell me now?"   With the birth of our baby in March came the usual accessories: sleepless nights, daytime fatigue, extreme emotions (crying baby and me), and we even topped it all off with some health issues for the both of us. Add to that four other darlings who need constant love and attention, and some less-than-ideal life situations and it seemed like we had the perfect storm.  I felt sapped and was so tired, and so quick to get stuck reading my Bible and getting anything out of it. I kept reading it because I knew I needed to, I wanted to dig deeper, but … [Read more...]

On Cleaning House – Four Principles That Have Helped Me

I'm not of the belief that cleanliness is right there next to godliness but truth be told, I really appreciate having a clean house. I’m more comfortable in my house when it is tidy and clean. That’s not to say it has to be immaculate or that I can’t choose to be at peace in the untidy version of my house. Or that when things are topsy-turvy and life is faster-paced than I like that I need to go crazy. And if I’m honest, more often than not, there’s a toilet that needs to be cleaned and dust on something and there’s probably toothpaste on two of our three bathroom … [Read more...]
